“Let the good times roll”, that's the Kawasaki slogan. How true, how true. But what's on, if the good old times have gone? If the signs of the time change. The charm on motorcycling is also the transient. You cannot repeat the good times forever.

The time of modification. The time of renewal. The time of change.

Motorcycling is not timeless, motorcycling has had its time. This time is not entirely over. But today, if we look at school playgrounds and at universities, we only see a few bikes. 20 years ago, motorcycles have been parked in rows.

The nice thing about this development is that motorcycling becomes more individual. Not everyone rides a motorcycle, the motorcycle-traffic becomes less. Therefore, riding in groups is much more fun. The routes are less crowded. Riding a bike has become much safer and is again something special.

In these times, where the number of motorcyclist decreases, the development departments construct the best motorcycles and the best equipment ever. For some it's hapiness, for others bad luck that motorcycling is no longer in vogue. Bad for the growth targets of the industry, good for the riders. The price-performance ratio is unbeatable in comparison to the 80s. So much motorcycle for such less money, unprecedented. So much fun to drive. So much technology. So much safety. So much comfort. That's the bare madness.

Good for those who are attached to the emotion of motorcycling. A real pity for those who do not know what they miss.

GS: Two letters becoming an ideology on two wheels

The BMW GS bikes are the most successful motorcycles in Germany. Considering the section of touring bikes, there is no motorcycle, which is more popular than the R1200GS. It looks like BMW Motorrad scored a hit with its GS. It is a motorcycle milestone on and off the road with almost no equal.

And true to their slogan “There is nothing that you can not improve” BMW Motorrad is working relentless to maintain the myth. The identification of the motorcyclists with the GS is such large and immense, that the myth became independent. But even BMW themselves sometimes don't get along with that pressure. 

Whether on the Internet, clubs and motorcycle tours of all kinds, the GS occupies the leadership in the world of motorcycles. The GS covers two worlds, on-road and off-road, without any compromise. Fortunately, there is no end in sight. This year, she'll become the most successful motorcycle, once again ...  

Who likes riding tours, with like-minded friends or alone, long or short, heavy or light, adventurous or relaxed, dirty or asphalted, is not able to pass the GS in the long run. Otherwise he misses something. Driving fun in a way like it only can be experienced on a GS.  

"What is he writing?", you might think. Then it's time to do a test ride. There are enough opportunities to. You will suddenly understand what I'm writing about. Have fun. It cannot be avoided.

That sounds good: Motorcycle pipes

The species of the motorcycle riders is a strange one. They pay special attention to the sound of their equipment. But because of the head protection required by law [thankfully!] you don't even hear anything from it. Except, yes, unless you ride through a long tunnel. There you get the feeling how it could sound. In addition to the sound, a special motorcycle pipe generates extra HP. A very pleasant ancillary effect, which is actually the essential.

Anyone who has ever ridden a BMW HP2 will understand that the sound of a bike is a real important thing. HP should not only signify high performance, it should also sound like this. And therefore, dismantle the standard exhaust and attach a appropriate exhaust system. Simple minds among us would verbalize it in the following way: Off da hook!  

The terrific thing about a motorcycle is, that you can always improve, change, personalize, customize and embellish something. If you want to, you will never finish, luckily. Everyone can generate his own erlking. Therefore every conversation does not start with aspects about the current look, rather with questions about what could be. Can we ever be satisfied with our bike? 100 percent? Or in other words: Do we really want to?  

Unfortunately, more and more. Thus, things are getting better and matured. That's why they, who are mechanics in spirit, have to buy an old tractor to screw something. There it still works. It doesn't surprise that an official racing motorcycle exhaust system costs as much as a motorcycle in the olden days. For good reason, because the exhausts generates more horsepower than the motorcycles have had in the past. Just imagine it!

Packing into my suitcase ... The comfort has moved into the motorcycle world since long time. Just before everything was spartan. You just had a sleeping bag, a sleeping pad and a 2-man tent. Now there is space for almost everything.

Although, the need to reduce wasn't so bad after all. But the motorcycle tours today reach targets at the end of the world, and therefore the requirements are different. The last true adventurers among us are weeks or months on the road now, or even longer. In areas where is nothing but soil and air. And one of that is dirty and the other is hot.

In such environments you have to be prepared for everything. They don't allow any mistakes. And because of that, the topic of motorcycle cases, handbags, backpacks, luggage etc., is, for the real touring biker, a damn important issue. Incidentally, you shouldn't spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar.

Of course, the weight plays an important role; you don't sleep at a quarry pond, but in a desert. At least, in most cases, in places where civilization is a far cry from you. The demands on every detail (motorcycle equipment, technique, motorcycle clothing) are extremely huge. And they really have to; the coming back should be assured. If you want one of those dreams become true, do everything, but no compromises.

Trend-setting: Good to have a navigation system

Again and again this changes and developments. Always something new. Again something else. Does this ever end? No! Of course not! Thankfully! No one is forced to keep up with the times and the development. Everyone can exit whenever he wants to. But the one who is interested, wants to enter on the latest state of affairs. Who wants to blame them for that? 

Not everything that is different has to be better, sure thing. But there have been great developments within the last years, like the navigation system for your motorcycle. As more and more motorcyclists team up for motorcycle tours, this navigation systems are very useful. Of course only, if you travel on uncharted territory. But is there anyone who does a great tour on his home track? Anybody? Thought so.

In the olden days, there was always one fool who had to ask for direction every few miles. And the scribbles on the maps have never been a good idea, have they? But that's over now. With a navigation system you can schedule your tour, days and weeks before you even start it. And it shows you maybe a path you perhaps never had detected.

Therefore not everyone in the group needs to have a navigation system, but possibly some few a navigation holder for being able alternate the squad leader.

If you mastered the handling, and you should really practice this before, a navigation system is a genuine, nice and useful luxury.

Resistence is futile, or at least incomprehensible. With every new car we focus our attention on the issue of security. But while riding the motorcycle, where security is really important, the old habits stand in the way. Many things are really outdated and obsolete.

The real reason, why many started to ride a motorcycle, based on following opinion: Riding was a personal statement against the bourgeoisie and against the Philistines. It was an expression of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. And the danger, the risk, was part of this movement. The breakneck part just belonged to motorcycling. It has been the evidence for being different, having the balls and living more dangerous.

Many had to pay for this attitude. But from today's view, this type of self-expression and provocation is no longer necessary. Riding a motorcycle has already arrived in the middle of society. It is well established. Hotels, as well as restaurants, are delighted in well-heeled motorcycle rider, no one changes the side of the street when a group of motorcyclists passes by foot. They are just polite and courteous ladies and gentlemen.

The starting position has changed totally. But in the minds and hearts onf many riders it seems not to have arrived. For them, everything that emits safety, is frowned upon. What a rubbish. Today, riding a motorcycle only implies fun and many want to be accompanied by a good sense of security. Some ride, some doff the motorycle key because of a sense of insecurity.

Black motorcycle clothing is such an issue. Black motorcycle helmets. Dark motorcycles. Cool, but not recognizable in critical situations. Colors can generate much safety without changing the driving style. Antilock braking system (ABS) – for some it's an abomination, for more and more it's a great feeling of security. The motorcycle and the entire motorcycle industrie work hard on the security aspect. But the motorcyclists do not use this thus far they do in other sports where the risk is an issue. The attitude, the awareness for safety, has not changed yet.  

Unfortunately, always something bad has to happen, before the human allows insight. Just think about the change of the public opinion concerning ski helmets. The new and younger generation is much more open-minded. The fun should be tarnished as few as possible. But the „Easy Rider“ seems to be incorrigible, although the battle againt the middle class has already been won. The individualist is also welcome in the society.

Note: In 1970, 21.332 people were killed on German roads. In 2008, only 4.600. It's shocking that the proportion of affected motorcyclists continues to increase. Every fifth drove a motorbike. Stubbornnes has a negative effect in this case – the only thing that could help is a change in thinking, think about it!

There are dudes who dig it

Off-Road is on the rise, like it was mountain biking a few years ago. That time ago, some few left the paved roads and entered the dirty fields. And that was a damn good idea. Today, this phenomenon seems to repeat itself. Or how could you explain the increasing number of new Enduro and Off-Road biker?

This fact divides the minds. For some people it is everything, while the other people don't care. After all, you just have to know, on which side you're standing.

If you want to experience the terrific feelings everybody is talking about, when you're digging in the dirt, why don't you visit “Enduropark Hechlingen” for a weekend? But we can only warn you – it's contagious. It's different. Quite different. And it's awesome!

It is perfect for whom, who feel bored even on their home racetrack. There is a large playground for grown-up children. And everything is ready for you – motorcycle clothing, motorcycle jackets, motorcycle pants, motorcycle boots, motorcycle helmets, protectors, motorcycle gloves, trail bikes … everything you need is already there. Of course you can also take along your own equipment. 

For your maiden voyage in the dirt we recommend an instructor. Of course you can find one at the park. And trust us, sometimes it is better to leave your own bike at home. You never know. And who knows, maybe one or two friends of yours come along. Be honest, whether it is a motorcycle or mountain bike, it's just about having tremendous fun.

Of course you don't have to explain the beauty of motorcycling to a biker. They already know. You have to explain it to those who do not bike. But obviously, they don't read such posts. But they really miss out on one big thing: the sense of community.

Motorcyclists are linked closer together than normal Internet communities, because they aren't just a loose network. They have a real affinity. Whoever made a motorcycle tour in a group knows what I am talking about. Each one engages a sense of responsibility for the other one and for the whole group. The emotional benefit is especially great when the group harmonizes. To achieve this goal, every member has to contribute a piece, but also has to take a backseat at the same time.

All these things don't touch an Internet group. The common ride and the feelings of solidarity are very intense, we do not only share the positive, but also the risk. That's the special thing on it.  

Because of that, motorcycling becomes more and more a common experience. Fewer and fewer ride alone. You meet up with friends, acquaintances or like-minded people. And on the bikes you experience something unique together with your friends, outside of your homes. For many, there is no better thing on earth. You take along from each of these tours, additional to the actual experience, one very important thing – Recreation.
